ASME B16.5 vs B16.47: Sizes, Series and Ordering

The two standards have different dimensional scopes. The size and series must be explicit before dimensions, bolting or mating compatibility are compared.

Published 20 October 2026 · Steel Gems editorial team

B16.5 scope

ASME B16.5 covers NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 within its specified classes and component coverage. Class 2500 coverage is limited to NPS 1/2 through NPS 12. Consult the ordered edition for all limits.

B16.47 scope

ASME B16.47 covers large-diameter steel flanges NPS 26 through NPS 60. Specify Series A or Series B and check the permitted type, class and material requirements in the ordered edition.

Series is a connection detail

Do not assume Series A and Series B flanges of the same NPS and class will mate. Compare actual OD, thickness, bolt-circle diameter, hole number/diameter and facing details.

Class is not a fixed pressure value

Class 150 does not mean a universal 150 psi working pressure. Pressure–temperature ratings depend on material group, temperature and the governing standard. PN is also not a direct substitution rule for ASME class.

This guide supports enquiry preparation. Use the ordered standard edition and responsible engineering review for material selection, pressure–temperature rating and joint acceptance.
