253 MA vs 310 Stainless Steel
Can 253 MA be preferred over SS 310? Compare oxidation resistance, creep strength, chemistry, operating conditions and procurement factors.
253MA vs 310 stainless: grade names and equivalents
253 MA, 253MA and MA253 are search spellings you may encounter. Specify the recognised grade designation and product standard in the order. Brand or supplier labels alone do not establish material equivalence.
| Grade | Common designation | Procurement check |
|---|---|---|
| 253 MA | UNS S30815 / EN 1.4835 | Confirm product form, manufacturer, product specification and certification. |
| 310S | UNS S31008 / EN 1.4845 | Confirm that the order requires 310S rather than 310 or 310H. |
An “equivalent” designation is a starting point for checking chemistry, condition and product requirements. It does not authorise substituting one alloy or product specification for another.
What is SS 310/310S?
SS 310 is an austenitic heat-resistant stainless steel with high chromium and nickel content. SS 310S is its lower-carbon version and is commonly specified for furnace parts, heat-treatment equipment, kilns, radiant tubes, burner components and other elevated-temperature service. Common designations include UNS S31008 and EN 1.4845 for 310S.
What is 253 MA?
253 MA is a lean austenitic heat-resistant grade, commonly designated UNS S30815 and EN 1.4835. Its combination of chromium, nickel, silicon, nitrogen and a small rare-earth addition supports strong oxide-scale adhesion and high-temperature creep strength despite its lower nickel content compared with 310S.
Typical chemistry comparison
| Element / feature | 253 MA | SS 310S |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | About 21% | About 25% |
| Nickel | About 11% | About 19–20% |
| Silicon | About 1.6% | About 1.5% |
| Nitrogen | Controlled addition | Not a defining addition |
| Rare earths | Cerium addition | Not normally added |
Values are indicative, not purchase limits. Always use the applicable material standard, manufacturer data sheet and approved specification.
Why can 253 MA outperform SS 310?
Service-temperature perspective
Published maximum temperatures are guidance, not automatic design limits. Actual suitability depends on atmosphere, loading, time, thermal cycling, section thickness and the governing code.

Application comparison
| Selection factor | 253 MA | SS 310/310S |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclic oxidation | Often preferred | Good |
| Continuous high heat | Excellent | Excellent |
| Creep-critical equipment | Often stronger | Established choice |
| Reducing/carburising service | Verify atmosphere | May be preferred after review |
| Availability and familiarity | More specialised | Widely specified |
| Cost sensitivity | Can reduce alloy cost | Higher nickel content |
Consider 253 MA for
- Furnace and kiln components
- Radiant and recuperator tubes
- Heat-treatment fixtures
- High-temperature conveyor parts
- Cycling oxidation service
Consider SS 310/310S when
- The drawing or code explicitly requires it
- 310S fabrication experience is established
- Availability or customer approval favours 310S
- The atmosphere has been proven for 310S
- Direct substitution is not permitted
Important limitation of 253 MA
Long exposure in roughly the 600–850°C range can create embrittlement concerns in heat-resistant stainless steels. Welding, forming and maintenance procedures must also recognise that material exposed to high temperature may lose room-temperature ductility. Confirm the complete operating cycle—not only the maximum temperature.
Can 253 MA directly replace SS 310?
Not without approval. Before substitution, the engineer, fabricator and purchaser should review the following:
- Continuous, peak and minimum operating temperatures
- Heating and cooling frequency
- Oxidising, reducing, carburising, nitriding or sulphurous atmosphere
- Applied stress, creep life and section thickness
- Corrosion, erosion and condensation risk
- Welding consumables and fabrication procedure
- Material form, size and availability
- Applicable ASTM, EN, ASME or project standard
- MTC, testing, inspection and traceability requirements
- Written customer or consultant approval
ENGINEERING VERDICT
Choose the grade against service conditions and the approved specification
Evaluate 253 MA when cyclic oxidation, creep strength and alloy economy drive the decision and the service conditions have been verified. Prefer SS 310/310S when the approved specification, established service record, atmosphere or supply chain makes it the safer documented choice.
What to include in a 253 MA or 310S enquiry
- Product form: plate, sheet, pipe, tube, bar or fabricated part.
- Exact grade designation, product standard and required condition.
- Thickness or OD and wall, width, length, quantity and tolerances.
- Service atmosphere, normal / peak temperature, cycle and mechanical loading where material review is requested.
- Drawing revision, welding requirements, MTC, inspection and delivery destination.
Price and lead time must be compared for the same form, dimensions, certification and supply scope. Lower nickel content does not guarantee a lower delivered quotation.
Is 253 MA a direct equivalent of 310S?
No. These are different alloys. Request written engineering approval before a substitution, including review of service atmosphere, stress, fabrication and applicable code.
Does a published maximum temperature guarantee service life?
No. Manufacturer guidance depends on product and exposure conditions. For example, Alleima publishes approximately 1150°C for its 253 MA tube in air; other product guidance can differ. Use the actual manufacturer datasheet and design assessment.
