PIPES · TECHNICAL ANSWER

What is the difference between seamless and ERW pipe?

Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld seam. ERW pipe is formed from strip or coil and joined along a longitudinal seam by electric-resistance welding.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

Neither construction is automatically superior for every service. The governing specification, size, wall, pressure, temperature and purchaser requirement determine the acceptable route.

Inspection and acceptance criteria differ by product standard.

Key points

  • Seamless: no longitudinal weld
  • ERW: controlled longitudinal resistance weld
  • Both can be suitable when properly specified
  • Construction must be stated in the enquiry
