FLANGES · TECHNICAL ANSWER

What is the difference between RF and RTJ flange facing?

Raised Face uses a gasket compressed against raised sealing surfaces. Ring Type Joint uses a metallic ring seated in machined grooves, typically for higher-pressure or demanding service.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

The two systems use different gasket geometries and flange machining.

RTJ groove number, ring type and material must match the flange standard, size and class.

Key points

  • RF: sheet or spiral-wound style gasket systems
  • RTJ: metallic ring and machined groove
  • Facings are not directly interchangeable
  • Surface finish and alignment matter
