PIPES · TECHNICAL ANSWER

What is the difference between ASTM A106 Grade B and API 5L Grade B?

ASTM A106 Grade B is primarily a seamless carbon-steel pressure-pipe specification for high-temperature service. API 5L Grade B is a line-pipe grade for pipeline transportation systems and may be supplied in seamless or welded construction.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

The two grades can have overlapping chemistry and strength ranges, but their intended service, manufacturing routes, testing and ordering requirements differ.

An enquiry must identify the required specification, product specification level for API 5L, dimensions, construction and service conditions.

Key points

  • A106: seamless high-temperature pressure pipe
  • API 5L: pipeline transportation pipe
  • API 5L requires PSL1 or PSL2 selection
  • They are not automatically interchangeable
