FLANGES · TECHNICAL ANSWER

What is the difference between ASTM A105 and ASTM A350 LF2?

ASTM A105 is a carbon-steel forging specification widely used for ambient and elevated-temperature pressure piping. ASTM A350 LF2 is a low-temperature carbon-steel forging grade with notch-toughness requirements.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

The minimum design metal temperature, thickness, impact testing and code rules determine whether low-temperature material is required.

Both still need the correct flange dimensional standard, class, facing and heat-treatment condition.

Key points

  • A105: general carbon-steel forging
  • A350 LF2: low-temperature forging
  • Impact properties are central to LF2
  • A105N is not the same as LF2
