Duplex 2205 vs Super Duplex 2507

Which grade is better for desalination, seawater, marine and chloride-bearing projects in Israel?

Published 6 October 2026Reviewed by Steel Gems

Why this comparison matters in Israel

Desalination plants, water-treatment systems, coastal infrastructure, chemical facilities and marine equipment commonly encounter chloride-bearing environments. Chlorides can initiate pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking. Duplex stainless steels combine austenitic and ferritic phases, providing high strength and improved resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking compared with common austenitic grades.

What is Duplex 2205?

Duplex 2205 is the most widely used standard duplex grade. Common designations include UNS S32205/S31803 and EN 1.4462. It offers high mechanical strength, good weldability and strong resistance to general, pitting, crevice and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Published producer data commonly places its PREN around 35 or above, depending on the specified chemistry.

What is Super Duplex 2507?

Super Duplex 2507, commonly UNS S32750 and EN 1.4410, contains higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen than 2205. This raises resistance to localized corrosion in aggressive chloride service. Producer data for seamless pipe identifies minimum PRE values around 42–42.5, together with very high mechanical strength.

PREN is a comparative indicator, not a complete design rule. Product form, heat treatment, fabrication and service conditions can change performance.

When 2205 may be preferred

  • Process water and moderately saline service with verified operating limits
  • Structural and pressure components where high strength can reduce section thickness after design approval
  • Projects where 2507 would add cost without a demonstrated corrosion benefit
  • Equipment with controlled temperature, chemistry, fabrication and cleaning

When 2507 may be preferred

  • Direct or severe seawater exposure
  • Reverse-osmosis, high-pressure desalination and brine-related equipment
  • High chloride concentration, elevated temperature or stagnant crevice conditions
  • Critical offshore, marine, pump, valve and heat-exchanger components
  • Applications where pitting and crevice-corrosion margin is central to reliability

Do not select only by chloride concentration

Material selection should also consider maximum metal temperature, pH, oxidizing species, dissolved oxygen, velocity, erosion, deposits, shutdown conditions, crevice geometry and cleaning chemicals. A grade that performs well in flowing water may behave differently under deposits, gaskets or stagnant shutdown conditions.

Fabrication and welding control

Both grades depend on a suitable austenite–ferrite balance. Poor heat input, excessive interpass temperature, slow cooling or unsuitable filler metal can reduce corrosion resistance and toughness. Use approved WPS/PQR procedures, qualified welders, suitable consumables and project-specific NDT. For critical service, consider ferrite measurement, PMI, corrosion testing and purchaser-appointed TPI.

ENGINEERING VERDICT

2205 is not the “lower-quality” grade—and 2507 is not automatically better

Choose 2205 where the verified environment fits its corrosion envelope and cost efficiency matters. Choose 2507 where aggressive seawater, brine, temperature or crevice conditions require the additional localized-corrosion margin. Final selection belongs to the responsible materials or corrosion engineer.
